A PORTRAIT
This triptych was created with the goal of capturing the human condition within an artwork, that is to say, create humanity through marks and traces. All three of these subjects are car-guards, people that are essentially ignored in South African society, and by creating this work I hope to give these people the humanity they deserve. I worked outside my comfort zone, creating a new type of art that is not limited by medium. Despite that, each brushstroke is intentional, and the line work gives each portrait a raw quality of emotion that I feel would be impossible with conventional media. In essence, this work is an attempt at giving individuality to those disenfranchised through their depiction in a portrait, something that has been exclusively available to the rich until very recently in modern history
